Gombe State, affectionately known as the "Jewel in the Savannah," was carved out of the old Bauchi State on October 1st, 1996, by the military administration of General Sani Abacha.
The creation of the state marked the culmination of a long, passionate struggle by its visionary founding fathers who sought rapid socio-economic development and a distinct administrative identity for the resilient people of the region.
Spanning an expansive 20,265 square kilometers, the state is a vibrant tapestry of multi-ethnic communities, predominately the Fulani, Tangale, Tera, Waja, and Hausa. Since its creation, Gombe has rapidly transformed from a sprawling provincial outpost into one of the fastest-growing commercial and administrative nerve centers in Northeastern Nigeria.
