The snake bite hospital Kaltungo has been in existence for many years but facilities have been over-stretched and became obsolete. This informed the decision of the state government under the leadership of Alh Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo to upgrade the hospital not only to serve as treatment centre but to serve as a research centre, in view of the fact that snake bite victims from other state such as Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Borno and beyond up to Cameroon patronise the hospital.

Modern equipment worth millions of Naira have already been installed at the 200 bed capacity hospital. The hospital has been expanded with eye clinic and dental unit. The eye clinic is for patients bitten by spotting Cobra, as they may likely be affected in the eyes while the dental unit would take care of those bleeding in the mouth and other complications caused by snake bite.

The Gombe State Commissioner of Health Dr. Ishaya Kennedy said the snake bite treatment centre would be linked with the specialist Hospital Gombe in case there were patients that would need dialysis after snake bite because of renal failure. According to the commissioner, the first batch of workers, about 42 labourers, cleaners, gardeners and security guards were employed.
