GULLY EROSION CONTROL

The State Deputy Governor Mr. Charles Ya’u Iliya has restated governments resolve to provide sustainable solutions to the problems of gully erosion that has besieged the state.

The Deputy Governor made the government’s position clear at the public presentation of Engineering Design of Gombe State University Gully System by Loraj Consult, organized by the Ministry of Environment in conjunction with NEWMAP Gombe State.

Mr. Charles Ya’u Iliya stressed that the administration aimed at achieving its goal of providing sustainable erosion control solutions through supporting and empowering relevant Ministries and Departments that are saddled with the responsibility of protecting the environment especially the Ministry of Environment and it’s Agencies like GOSEPA and NEWMAP.

He described the presentation of Gombe State Gully Erosion Control System as another step towards reducing soil erosion, calling on the stakeholders and members of the academia to make good use of the program towards taking incisive look at the academia to make use of the technical session.

Mr Iliya then urged the consultant to consider the recommendations of experts stressing that the design must ensure sufficient provision for safe discharge and sufficient strength to withstand the pressure exerted by flowing water and should be protected from erosion due to flow passing over it.

Earlier in her address of welcome, the Commissioner, Ministry of Environment Hajiya Saadatu Saad explained to the gathering that the presentation of Engineering Design for Gombe State University Gully erosion system was part of steps taken by the administration to control erosion in the state.

She said the engineering design is of paramount importance in control of gullies because all other works depends on design, thereby commending the Gombe state Governor and Loraj Consultants for the design of Gombe State University gully erosion system.

The Speaker Gombe state House of Assembly Alh. Nasiru Abubakar Nono represented by Hon. Rambi Ayala assured of the legislators support to provide a legal framework for any project that will bring development in the state.

In their separate responses, the Vice Chancellor, Gombe state University, Prof. Ibrahim Sani Umar and Senior District Head of Gombe Alh. Abdulkadir  Abubakar thanked the Governor, his Deputy, Ministry of Environment and NEWMAP for efforts toward control of erosion in the Gombe state.

Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of the Engineering Design for Gombe state University Gully Erosion by Loraj Consultant addressing causes, effects and solutions to the control of gully erosion in Gombe State University and the state.
