Gombe State Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Jani Adamu Bello, has said that the government in collaboration with the federal government had procured farming equipment, wheat and rice seeds for dry season farming with a view to enhancing its strategies for food security.

He said the seeds, fertilisers and farming equipment purchased by the two governments would be sold at subsidised rates to the dry season farmers.

According to him, government through its wheat and rice farming support scheme programme had purchased over 400 bags of 50 kg of both wheat and rice seeds at the cost of N 2.6 million which were sold to the farmers at subsidised rate of N 1,950 per bag instead of the N 3 000 market price.

He said 30 units of thrasher machines were purchased by the two governments at the total cost of 10.5 million, which would be sold to the farmers at N250, 000, against 350,000 market price and 160 of water pumps were also purchased at N50, 000 each and sold to the farmers at N7, 500.

Bello also added that the governments have purchased 300 Nap sack sprayers at the sum of N13, 200 each and ware sold at N2, 200, to the farmers, even as he said that the state government had in addition distributed over 5,300 bags of fertilizer reserved from last year’s disbursement which were sold to the farmers at the subsidised rates of N 3, 200 against the N 6,200 market price.

He said the state government alone had spent the sum of N 14million on dry farming support programme, even as he added that the selling of the farm items were done at 40% discount rate on each item.
